Лимерик: непереводимая игра слов или переводимая игра... Известно, что первый сборник лимериков был издан в Лондоне в 1821 г. и назывался « he His ozy of Six ee Wo derful Old Wome », а в 1822 г. за ним последовал еще один — «A ecdo es a d Adve ures of Fif ee Ge leme ». Стихи в этих сборниках, хотя и были написаны в форме лимерика, так не назывались. Само слово «лимерик» официально вошло в английский язык в 1898 г., когда оно было зафиксировано в Оксфордском словаре (Oxford E glish Dic io ary) и объяснялось как «неприличные бессмысленные стихи» (i dece o se se verse). Очевидную популярность лимерик как стихотворная форма приобрел после 1846 г. Тогда вышел в свет первый томик стихов Эдварда Лира «A Book of o se se», стихов, написанных для детей и, как потом оказалось, многих и многих взрослых, в форме лимерика. (Хотя, надо заметить, Э. Лир никогда свои стихи лимериками не называл; название закрепилось за этой стихотворной формой само собой несколько позже — видимо, благодаря сходству с импровизационной народной песенной формой.) Э. Лир признавался, что использовал эту форму, услышав как-то « here was a sick ma of obago» 1 — стишок, вошедший в сборник «A ecdo es a d Adve ures of Fif ee Ge leme »; он находил, что форма лимерика предоставляет безграничные возможности для использования рифмы, а забавное содержание является замечательным материалом для художественных иллюстраций.
